What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a scientific medical art that deals with the prevention and treatment of diseases by using needles. For thousands of years it has been accepted by the general population for its good curative effect, wide range of indications, simple application, minimal side effects, low cost, safety, etc. In 1971 president Nixon visited China, during which time the Chinese government demonstrated and published the successful use of acupuncture as an anesthetic for surgery. After this time acupuncture became accepted and well known by people all over the world. In 1979 The World Health Organization (WHO) published a list of 43 different kinds of diseases that could be effectively treated using specific acupuncture points, which made acupuncture a new member of modern medical science. Acupuncture has been used to clinically treat over 300 different kinds of diseases, and has shown significant effective results in treating over 100 of these. Today, acupuncture therapies have been used by about 140 different countries, and its use continues to grow. In the United States there are more and more laws governing the practice of acupuncture. For the first time, medical insurance companies are offering acupuncture coverage as part of their medical services and the number of companies doing so each year is climbing.

What Does Acupuncture Do?

Acupuncture restores the body to a state of homeostasis. Acupuncture works to allow the body to heal itself. Acupuncture has been practiced for over 5000 years, not only in China, but also in many countries around the world. Why does acupuncture work, and how does acupuncture work in human bodies? The Traditional Chinese considered that there are channels and collateral’s called Jinglou, or meridian in the human body. The channel is the pathway of signal transduction and relating internal organs in inside of our body. There are 14 major channels in human body. Along these channels there are many acupuncture points. Acupuncture treats diseases using these channels and the acupoints along them to to regulate the Yin and Yang, keeping the functions and activities of all parts of the body in relative harmony and balance. Each major channel is associated with a specific internal organ and also reflects the physiological and pathological conditions of that organ. When an internal organ is affected with a pathological or physiological factor, some acupoints on the channels may become tender or show other signs of abnormality. When the acupoints on the channel are stimulated by acupuncture, the affected organ may recover. For instance, if a patient has disorder in his appendix, the acupuncture point of appendix on the leg will be tender or show abnormality. By treating the acupoints with acupuncture or acupressure. the appendix will gradually recovered. In many cases of appendicitis they do not need any medication or surgery. Scientific research and clinical experience has shown that the stimulation of certain acupuncture points are dual regulatory points. This means that an acupoint can have opposite effects depending on what the body needs. For example if a person has constipation a specific acupuncture point is chosen to relieve this problem. Likewise the opposite condition can occur, in this case diarrhea as opposed to constipation and the diarrhea will resolve using the same acupuncture point as that chosen to relieve constipation. Another good example would be when a patient’s heartbeat is higher than normal, acupuncture treatment can make it slow down toward the normal range. If the hear beat is too slow, acupuncture treatment can stimulate it to beat faster toward the normal range. For instance, the acupoint Nai-guan is not only for vomiting, but also can regulate the heartbeat. Some other points can help some mild problems, such as headache, stomachache, stomach acid, jaw pain, vomiting, or even fainting at emergency situation. If people are interested on health maintenance at home, I can make some demonstration on separate show or seminar. Acupuncture can be used to treat infectious diseases. Acupuncture doesn’t inject any antibiotics and doesn’t kill bacteria and viruses directly. Scientific research showed that acupuncture can increase the capacity of eating pathogens of white cells. Acupuncture treatment stimulates and supports a persons immune system to strengthen it, in order to control and eradicate infections. This is why acupuncture is effective in curing infectious diseases where antibiotics have proven ineffective. The use of acupuncture in viral infections is exceptionally valuable in this regard. In my practice, I have treated many people with sinus infection, ear infection, appendicitis, enteritis, flu-like virus infections, and even hepatitis.
